Tools of the Trade #3 - Nonprofit Ready

In the ministry and nonprofit world, it's very common to get thrown in to responsibilities you weren't quite prepared for. In a new organization especially, staff positions are rarely clearly defined and segregated based on skills. What you usually have is a small team of passionate and motivated people willing to do what they need to do get move the vision forward. Generally you will end up asking yourself the question, "This needs to get done but how?" or "I just need to get some basics so I know where to start here." Out there in the world of lots to do and very little resources, it's likely no one is going to sit down and show you what to do.

One of the best professional development tools I've found for is the website nonprofitready.org. It's a free collection of hundreds of professional development resources - there are online classes, resource guides, brief videos - all kinds of great material. They cover topics like fundraising, board development, finance, grant-writing and operations. It's a really well-organized and easy to use site and there are even several certificates you can earn and add to your credentials.

Even if you've been working in nonprofit administration and operations for a long time, Nonprofit Ready is a great site to brush up on skills. I'm a big believer in consistent learning and professional development. If you have other similar resources, let us know!
